Where to stay in Mission for a birding trip

Early morning on a footpath at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, Texas, with native brush on both sides of the trail

If there are four, six or eight of you and you want to be out at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park when the gate opens, book a three-bedroom house in Mission with a real kitchen and a washer, and drive out to the park from there. That's the short answer. Our nine Mission homes are single-family residences spread through the Sharyland side of town and the newer subdivisions near the shopping along Expressway 83, close to the park road without being in an RV resort. Renovated 3BR APT nice/cozy! and Renovated Stylish Condo - Pool & Jacuzzi - 3 bed both sleep six and sit in a community with a pool and a gym. Casa Renata sleeps eight behind a gate in Sharyland. Brand New Apt - Excellent for Big Families sleeps nine, the largest stated capacity we have in Mission.

The lodging problem birders run into here

Mission's close-in lodging is almost entirely RV resorts. Bentsen Palm Village and Bentsen Palm RV Park sit right up against the park, McAllen Mission RV Resort is over on North Bentsen Palm Drive with the National Butterfly Center essentially next door, and if you want a key and a front desk instead, the hotels cluster east toward McAllen. For a small group travelling together in one or two cars, that leaves a gap that a house fills well.

A house solves the things that actually shape a birding trip. You're eating breakfast before seven, which no continental spread in town is going to cover. You're coming back dusty and sweaty from seven miles of trail and park road, and you want a washer rather than a laundromat. You want the group in one place to decide where tomorrow starts: Bentsen, the butterfly center on Butterfly Park Drive, or the drive east to Santa Ana over in Alamo. All nine of our Mission homes have a kitchen, a washer, air conditioning and Wi-Fi, so the question isn't whether you get those, it's how your group wants to be arranged around them.

How Bentsen works, and what it means for where you sleep

Bentsen is car-free. You leave the vehicle at the entrance off South Bentsen Palm Drive and go in on foot, by bike, or on the park tram along the main loop. There are seven miles of trail and park road inside, a hawk observation tower, and bike rentals if you don't travel with your own. Something over 350 species have been documented inside the park boundary, which is why the place is the flagship site of the World Birding Center and why serious birders plan whole weeks around it. Entry runs five dollars a head for adults; children twelve and under go free.

Practically, that means your day has a shape: you park once, you walk a lot, and you come out. Nothing about the lodging needs to be within sight of the gate. It needs to let you leave early and return comfortably. Mission is small and the park sits six or so miles west of the city, so the drive from the shopping-corridor side of town out to the entrance is short and straightforward either way.

Two other sites are worth building days around. The National Butterfly Center is adjacent to the state park on Butterfly Park Drive, a hundred acres of gardens and native habitat where more than 240 butterfly species have been recorded. Getting there from the expressway: exit Conway, head south toward the river, go past the Mission hike and bike trails, turn right on Military Parkway, follow the two-lane road, and when it drops take the sharp left; the entrance is less than a mile along on the left. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is over in Alamo on Green Jay Road, with a seven-mile paved wildlife drive and another twelve miles of foot trails and access roads, including a half-mile paved loop that's wheelchair accessible. From Mission you take 83 east to Alamo, turn south on FM 907 and run it seven miles down to Old Military Highway, then a left and a quarter mile east.

The four I'd put in front of a birding group

The covered gazebo, BBQ pit and outdoor dining area in the private backyard at Casa Renata in Sharyland, Mission, Texas

Casa Renata - Huge Backyard for family Reunions is the one I'd book for a group of six to eight who want to be outdoors in the evening too. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, in a gated community in the heart of Sharyland with Target, Walmart and restaurants just outside the neighborhood, so the provisioning run takes ten minutes. The backyard carries a BBQ pit, a covered gazebo, an outdoor dining table and a fireplace, which in a Valley winter is where you'll end up with a list and a beer after dark. There's a first-floor bedroom with its own full bath, which matters more than people expect when half the group is up at five-thirty.

Brand New Apt - Excellent for Big Families sleeps nine across three bedrooms, the highest stated occupancy among our Mission houses. It's a brand-new three-bed, two-bath with a large private backyard and a BBQ pit, minutes from La Plaza Mall and the hospitals. If your group is a loose nine rather than a tight six, this is where the arithmetic works without anyone drawing the short straw.

Renovated Stylish Condo - Pool & Jacuzzi - 3 bed sleeps six and is the better-equipped of our two renovated three-bedrooms: cooking basics, a dining table that seats the group, blackout curtains for anyone who wants to sleep past dawn after a long morning, and a patio with an outdoor kitchen. The community has a large pool, a jacuzzi, a gym and BBQ pits with outdoor seating, and it's three minutes from Target, TJ Maxx, Ross and Walmart. Note it doesn't accept pets.

Renovated 3BR APT nice/cozy! also sleeps six in the same kind of setting, with a dedicated workspace if someone on the trip is half-working, and it does take pets. It's the plainer of the two inside. Guests rate it highly and keep coming back on long stays, which tells you something about how it lives rather than how it photographs.

A fifth option, with a caveat

Penthouse with Pool & Jacuzzi sleeps six across three bedrooms, has a balcony and a jacuzzi, takes pets, and sits centrally. Its guest rating runs a little below the others on this page, and its description is the thinnest of the group. For a birding party that will mostly be out of the house from first light to mid-afternoon, that may not matter at all. If the house is going to be where you spend your evenings, I'd point you at Casa Renata first.

Worth knowing about the rest of our Mission inventory: New & Cozy - Hot Jacuzzi 3BR Condo GREAT location sleeps eight and ✨Amalfi ✨ Pool & Jacuzzi Condo sleeps seven, both with a pool and gym in the community. For a party of four or five, the two-bedroom Wonder House inside a private gated community and Cardinal Home, a brand-new two-bed three minutes from Mission Hospital and the big-box shopping, each sleep six without the third bedroom you may not need.

Planning the week around the birds, not the house

Three things I'd tell a group before they book.

  • Pick on bedrooms and bathrooms, not on extras. Six people in three bedrooms with two baths works. Eight people in three bedrooms works better when there are three baths, which is Casa Renata's advantage.
  • Decide if you're cooking. Early starts mean breakfast at the house. Casa Renata, Brand New Apt and Renovated Stylish Condo all have coffee makers and cooking basics in the kitchen, and the grocery shopping is a few minutes away from each.
  • Spread the sites across days. Bentsen on foot is a full morning minimum given the trail mileage inside. The butterfly center is close enough to pair with it. Santa Ana is its own day, east through Alamo, with the wildlife drive and the foot trails worth more than a quick loop.

Kitchen and dining table in the Renovated Stylish Condo - Pool and Jacuzzi three-bedroom in Mission, Texas

One more scheduling note. Pets travel with birders more often than you'd think, and three of the homes above take them: Casa Renata, Renovated 3BR APT and the Penthouse. The two that don't are Brand New Apt and Renovated Stylish Condo.

Booking it

Tell us the dates, the headcount and whether a dog is coming, and we'll tell you which of the nine Mission homes is open and which one fits the way your group actually travels. You book direct with our team at Centrica Rental Co., and we're reachable by message, phone or text while you're here if something needs sorting. We also keep homes in McAllen, Pharr and Alamo if your itinerary leans east toward Santa Ana rather than west toward Bentsen.
